Sint Maarten
Sint Maarten, part of the Dutch Netherlands, is a country on the southern part of a Caribbean island (Saint Martin is the northern French territory). Natural landscapes span lagoons, beaches and salt pans, while the capital, Philipsburg, has cobblestone streets and colorful, colonial-style buildings lining its Front Street shopping area. The port is a popular cruise-ship stop.. In a 2000 referendum, the
citizens of Sint Maarten voted to become a self-governing country
within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The change in status became
effective in October of 2010 with the dissolution of the Netherlands
Antilles.
